The Souvenir (Fidelity) Jean-Baptiste Greuze, 1787–1789
A cross-section from a late-Rococo painting depicting a woman with her dog, an 18th-century symbol of faithful love. The gaze is the heart of the painting: tender, downcast, and quietly devotional. The original hangs in the Wallace Collection in London.
The face from this painting was later incorporated into John Craig’s cover collage of The Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness iconic double album.
Curator: Dr. Noah Charney
Noah Charney is an art historian and the internationally best-selling author of more than thirty books, including The Collector of Lives, a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in Biography. He is widely regarded as the world's leading authority on art crime, founded the Association for Research into Crimes against Art (ARCA), and has taught at Yale and Brown and presented for the BBC.
Noah is also co-author, with Blackdot founder Joel Pennington, of Blackdot: The Road to the Tattoo Revolution. In the Eyes is the first in a series of guest curations for Blackdot.
Collection: In the Eyes
A series of designs sourced from the eyes of famous artworks. Rather than reproducing entire paintings, each piece isolates the gaze, the part of an artwork most often described as "alive," and translates it into a tattoo.

Placement Options
What to expect
Yes — significantly less.
Most clients describe traditional tattooing as a 6–7 out of 10 on the pain scale.
Blackdot is typically rated around a 1–2 out of 10.
Because the system delivers ink with controlled, consistent precision and minimal skin trauma, the experience feels far gentler than conventional tattooing.
While sensitivity varies depending on placement and individual tolerance, clients are often surprised by how comfortable the process is.
Healing time depends on the placement and your body, but Blackdot tattoos typically heal faster than traditional tattoos. Most clients experience surface healing within 1–2 weeks, with full healing generally completed in 3–4 weeks. Following proper aftercare ensures the best results.
Please bring a valid government-issued ID, as well as your confirmation details. We recommend arriving well-rested, hydrated, and having eaten beforehand. Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed.
